The Logical Song (please tell me who I am)

"The Logical Song" by Supertramp

When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they'd be singing so happily
Joyfully, playfully watching me
But then they sent me away
To teach me how to be sensible
Logical, responsible, practical
And they showed me a world
Where I could be so dependable
Clinical, intellectual, cynical

There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am

Now watch what you say
Or they'll be calling you a radical
A liberal, fanatical, criminal
Won't you sign up your name
We'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable

At night when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am, who I am, who I am.

  1. Well, Joel,
Had to leave a comment on this song that was one of my favourites growing up in the 70's. Thank the Good Lord, I now have some kind of notion as to who I am ... :) in Christ that is.
    A blast from the past...thanks!

    In Him,

Yep I heard this song on the radio a couple of times in the past few days. I have so many thoughts about the lyrics (the verses and the chorus). Anyway I couldn't seem to gather all my many thoughts together so instead of writing about them I made it easy for myself - I found the video and lyrics, and others can make of it what they will. :)

And Amen to your words! ... the overall thing that sticks out in the song (to me) is "please tell me who I am," and I'm thankful too that the Lord continues to be very gracious in helping me understand my solid identity in Him.

  3. Delilah, interesting comment. Truthfully, I am not associating this song with religion. If anything my move away from religion might more closely resemble, if only slightly (and I mean slightly), my reason for posting this song.

And with that said, in my freedom in Christ (not religion), I have been accused of being a liberal... LOL. :)

However, even with all that said... I'll move away from my or your particular thoughts as to why I may have posted this song, and I'll say that one of the absolutely beautiful things about art/music is that it is interpreted individually and diversely (even contradistinctively) by each person beholding it, so no matter what I may have gotten out of this song, you may get something completely different out of it... and that's just cool with me!
